Understanding Students Strengths and Struggles

Stephen Peters wrote, "You Don't Know Enough About Me to Teach Me". Across the country and abroad, teachers are meeting face-to-face with students that are of different ethnicities. In order for teachers to make a difference in the learning of a child, one must first understand them. When a teacher understands a child, he or she can best serve that child academically. Does a race of an individual really matter in the classroom?

Race may be a factor initially. Once students know that you care, the race factor will dwindle away. Discipline simply is "love." Students respond well to sincereness. Follow through, keep your word, be fair, and stay objective. Make it your personal responsibility to be transparent and to get to know our students on a personal level. There is no cookie cutter strategy that works for all. Individualized instruction works best. We must treat our students like we want to be treated and no one enjoys feeling as if they do not matter.
