Highly Qualified Teachers

What realy says that a teacher is highly qualified to teach? Is it high test scores? There are many teacher that are deemed highly qualified by Department of Education in their state, but aren't making the cut in the classrooms. There are also teacher who are considered highly qualified by the SDE but are making great gains in the classrooms. It's my belief that teachers are highly qualified when students respond successfully to their teaching. What do you think?

I agree. Teachers who are labeled “highly qualified” should students that are successful in learning and can make meaning full contributions to society. It is unfortunate that society bases everything on a test. Today teachers must pass a test in order to teacher. Meaning, regardless of how effective one may be in the classroom, unless you pass a test you cannot teach. My school system has lost a lot of effective classroom teachers because of the stipulation. Personally, I would rather have an effective classroom teacher that did not pass their standardized test teaching my child, than someone that did pass a standardized test and is ineffective in the classroom. Some people are just good test takers and do not have what it takes to teach others. Whose classroom would you like your child to be in?
