Poverty Myths

There are many myths that plague low income students. These myths do more harm that good for the students. Here are a few myths: poor people are unmotivated and have weak work ethics; poor parents are uninvolved in their children's learning because they do not value education; poor people are tend to abuse drugs and alcohol; and poor people are linguistically deficient. What are your thoughts? Are these myths or facts?

Myths are simply myths. The only way we bring any validity to a myth is if we by into the stereotype and act it out. I work at a school that has 90% or more of it's students on free or reduced lunch. Consequently, many of those students live below the poverty line. They have little resources yet they are rich in pride and always seem to aim high. This is due to a schoolwide standard of high achievement. If you set your goals high, each willing student will rise to the challenge. Never set lesser goals due to a myth.
